First off, I love food. And I also love food in a social environment. What made me think this is because a YouTube comedian, David So (account name: DavidSoComedy). He influenced me to see food in another light and what stood out to me is the behaviour towards his guests. I saw a different behaviour and it was new to me in a way. My relatives from Vietnam confirmed it for me that it is an etiquette and respect. If you take someone or some people out to eat, then you are treating them and paying for their meals. This is different in my lifestyle and with my group of friends, although a major reason is that we are students with a low budget, but this made me think of small cultural differences. You would never see a severe autistic child in public because the video below will show you why. Autism holds dear to me for a very long time and it is still a condition I cannot try to understand. It has been 20 years living with an autistic child with random outbursts and I cannot begin to start on designing for her. What strikes me is how little people know about this. Sure autism is out there and everyone knows the medical definition of it, but what most people do not know is the severity of taking care of an autistic child with outbursts. It is like a normal child having a tantrum, but for an autistic child, telling him/her to simply shut up won’t do it - someone will get physically injured for sure. Reference:
Screenshot of Jane McGonigal's ted talk online The concept of ‘gaming’ continues to interest me for almost a decade. I do not think I looked into it seriously enough to understand that it is an interesting and brilliant concept until last year, me and two others took the risk of using gaming as a project idea. Although the project did not work out as successfully as we thought, I still believe gaming has a potential to be designed. I have been inspired by Jane McGonigal and her ideas to improve mental health through games, and the story of Kingdom of Lydia and their solution to food shortage was play games to reduce food intake. So for a while I have been involved in theatre productions (since 2012, on and off). My first experience is with Secret Cinema presenting Prometheus. I learnt that Secret Cinema presented shows/films produced before the 1990s, the old classics they say. With Prometheus being the first modern film to work on, they had a team of artist, designers and volunteers to pull off a spectacular display of a giant spaceship by making use of all the spaces, walls, rooms, corridors inside the building, remodelling it all to look high-tech and futuristic. They also hired actors to play character roles from the movie and play it out for the audience, whether it is being a super sneaky villain and team up with some of the audiences (and they are allowed to shout in their faces, it's part of being immersive).
What impressed me was the excitement from the audience and the production crew. The energy and the honour of being the start of an innovative and contemporary 'immersive' theatre. This new theatre became my interest to the present day. They’re website is www.secretcinema.org Photographs are taken by me while I was there as a volunteer. |
