I produced a 4 piece computer out of black gaff tape and cardboard. The computer was chosen as the most obvious object when it comes to my autistic sister. However the obsession with computer devices and the internet can apply to anyone, in the case of my sister, I believe I can call her level of obsession extreme. It is very hard to analyse and create an adaptation to the black gaff tape and asked design tutors for help which became a learning experience that my chosen interest area is very difficult to apply to the workshop. So for the adaptation with white gaff tape was to create subtle corner designs that keeps the 4 piece computer in an accurate placement on a table, the same way my sister would always set up her computer.

My chosen material was synthetic hair. This relates to my sisters behaviour towards hair. She would at random times caress hair own/someone else’s hair and other times, she would want to pull out her own hair with aggression. I did not think to connect the two so closely and the objective was just to explore synthetic hair as a material rather than make something meaningful to my project interest, because in the end, it will be meaningful eventually.
I had my tutorial with M. Conreen and he suggested I should try making hair from other materials. So I cut paper into very fine strips and found that the strength of paper decreased and could not hold on. The paper hair would curl itself.
This workshop consist of stripping down newspaper articles relating and not relating to my project idea. Throughout most of the day, I could not understand or get an idea on what I should produce. I also could not find anything exciting relating to my project but that is due to the limited amount of interesting newspaper stories. What I did get out of it is the entertainment.
First off, I love food. And I also love food in a social environment. What made me think this is because a YouTube comedian, David So (account name: DavidSoComedy). He influenced me to see food in another light and what stood out to me is the behaviour towards his guests. I saw a different behaviour and it was new to me in a way. My relatives from Vietnam confirmed it for me that it is an etiquette and respect. If you take someone or some people out to eat, then you are treating them and paying for their meals. This is different in my lifestyle and with my group of friends, although a major reason is that we are students with a low budget, but this made me think of small cultural differences. Screenshot from David So's video, LOL EP. 25: MY MOTHERS COOKING, this is not the video I was looking for but it is close enough. Reference:
You would never see a severe autistic child in public because the video below will show you why. Autism holds dear to me for a very long time and it is still a condition I cannot try to understand. It has been 20 years living with an autistic child with random outbursts and I cannot begin to start on designing for her. What strikes me is how little people know about this. Sure autism is out there and everyone knows the medical definition of it, but what most people do not know is the severity of taking care of an autistic child with outbursts. It is like a normal child having a tantrum, but for an autistic child, telling him/her to simply shut up won’t do it - someone will get physically injured for sure. Reference:
